Massage > Sweet Almond Oil
Sweet Almond oil is obtained from the nut or seed of the almond tree which is
native to Asia and the Mediterranean regions.
The oil is fine and light with a golden yellow tinge of colour and an almost
imperceptible slightly sweet nutty aroma.
One of the classic oils, sweet almond was used in ancient Rome to beautify the
skin and treat injuries. It absorbs fairly quickly, leaving a slightly oily, yet
not unpleasant feeling to the skin.
Almond oil is beneficial to all skins, regardless of type or age, and has
excellent lubricating and reasonable penetrating properties, therefore having a
nourishing, pampering and protecting effect. It is particularly helpful for dry,
sensitive skins, eczema, itching, soreness, swelling, burns, thread veins and
inflammation. Another use is the removal of make-up and protection against the
elements, particularly the sun and wind, and it is suitable for hot packs. The
large molecules
in this oil make it heavier, and therefore suitable for making a very
moisturizing cream or salve.
Sweet almond oil is a good all-purpose carrier oil for use with essential oils.
It is rich in protein and contains glucosides, oleic and linoleic acid, minerals
including copper and iron, and vitamins A, B1,
B2, B6 and E.
Almond oil has an approximate shelf life of ten months, although the vitamin E
content is reputed to help preserve it and adding a vitamin E capsule slows down
the oxidation process. This oil can be used alone or you can blend it with other
oils, making more expensive carrier oils go further.
Sweet almond oil should not be used on anyone allergic to nuts and seed, or with
liver damage.
